Man Gets 5-Year Sentence In ID Theft Scheme

BALTIMORE - A Baltimore man was sentenced Wednesday to more than five years in prison on bank fraud and identity theft charges. Lavon Caldwell, 25, was sentenced to 61 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Caldwell was also ordered to pay restitution of more than $414,000.

Caldwell was accused of being part of a scheme to purchase at least $320,000 in retail goods and $220,000 in automobiles using fraudulently opened credit accounts in the names of at least 15 victims.

Caldwell was arrested on June 7.

He used fraudulent driver?s licenses at stores to open credit accounts in the names of the victims, and then used temporary credit cards to buy high-priced goods, such as plasma televisions and building materials, officials said.

Nekia Hunter pleaded guilty in August and faces a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison for bank fraud conspiracy. Hunter’s sentencing is set for Dec. 13.

Faye Marie Jones, 52, was sentenced Nov. 15 to three years in prison and two years of supervised release.

Baltimore County police and the Calvert County Sheriff’s Officer were involved in the investigation.
